Malaysia Airports Ushers In Chinese New Year With Month-Long Immersive Festive Campaign Incorporating Traditional And Digital Experiences

SEPANG – Malaysia Airports today kicked off its Chinese New Year festive campaign with a thrilling line-up of activities and performances at the KLIA Main Terminal of KL International Airport (IATA Code: KUL). Among those include an award-winning dragon and lion dance performance and lou sang; a popular tradition in Malaysia where communities gather to toss a dish of shredded vegetables, symbolizing prosperity and success for the year ahead. During the festive campaign launch, the senior management team led by acting group chief executive officer, Dato’ Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh distributed special festive goodies and mandarin oranges to passengers.

From now till 9 February, passengers travelling through KUL will be able to experience exciting festive activities and performances lined up at both its terminals, KLIA Main and klia2. Guests can participate in calligraphy and paper cutting workshops (17 January, 1 & 2 February), or be woo-ed by performances such as Chinese opera (17 January), drum performance (17, 24 January), and lion dance performance (17 January and 8 February). This year’s campaign theme is inspired by a Floating Garden, with the koi fish as the star of the centerpiece, symbolizing luck and prosperity. The set-up also incorporates a fusion of both traditional and modern elements. It will also be the first time for Malaysia Airports to feature augmented reality (AR) in its festive campaign.

Nazli Aziz, senior general manager of commercial services, said, “The festive season is a special one for us because Malaysia is diverse in its culture and festive celebrations. Therefore, we are continuously looking for ways on how we can enhance the passenger experience at our airports to commemorate these festive seasons and make them meaningful for both the local community as well as those coming to Malaysia for the first time.”

“This year, we are incorporating digital technology into our festive set-up by leveraging on AR technology which is a first for us. All passengers need to do is to scan the marker logo to receive a virtual greeting card and they can then take a picture with the God of Prosperity that will appear in front of them. They can send the greeting card to their loved ones via social media. We hope that through these initiatives, passengers can enjoy a more immersive experience at the airport.”

Those passing through our other international airports in Malaysia (Langkawi International Airport, Penang International Airport, Kota Kinabalu International Airport and Kuching International Airport) will also be treated to exciting lion dance performances at the respective airports on 1 February, and an appearance from the God of Prosperity on 2 February.

Aside from the exciting activities and performances, those looking for a challenge can participate in the ‘Count, Share & Win’ contest for a chance to win a GoPro Hero 7 and Fossil Gen 5 Smart Watch. All you have to do is count the number of koi fish stickers at the KLIA main terminal set up.
